VHQ Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

| Help Reference | Land Mines | FCC Printable Forms | Club Application Instructions |

A.  Go to the ARRL's Vanity Page or the FCC's Vanity FAQ for your answer. A.  No. No one at VHQ is authorized by the FCC to issue call signs or to collect the application fee. All applications must be filed through the FCC and in accordance with the FCC regulations. A.  Go to http://www.fcc.gov/Forms/Form605/605.html for Forms 159 (to pay fee) and 605 (application), plus necessary instructions. Be sure to check out VHQ's Land Mines before you file your application. Click here to download Adobe's PDF reader. A.  The data used in VHQ's call sign tables is available to the public through the FCC's website. Some data is downloaded every day, other data is downloaded weekly and both are used to process the call sign tables. A.  The FCC usually posts new data on their FTP site daily, excluding Monday and holidays, around 10:00am - 1:00pm (Eastern). VHQ's update robot will attempt to download the daily update starting at 10:00am (Eastern). If the update is not yet available, the robot will wait 10 minutes and then try again. The update robot will continue to look for the daily update every 10 minutes for about 8 hours. After that time, the robot will finally give up. Once the daily update is downloaded, however, new call sign tables will be created and then uploaded to VHQ. The update process takes about 45-60 minutes.

The data tables contain current, as well as past, application status. Daily status changes are downloaded, processed and uploaded daily. Once a week, usually Monday night, a complete call sign, license and application summary is downloaded and processed. All application status is continually collected, archived and viewable. A.  Usually 18-20 days. VHQ's home page lists the filing date of the most recent application grants on the Home page. A.  Applicants who submit an FCC Form 605 application but are not successful in obtaining a call sign with that application may seek a refund of the application fee, by writing to: FCC, 1270 Fairfield Rd, Gettysburg PA 17325-7245. Applicants must write to the FCC to obtain a refund. Be sure to include your FRN and application File Number when seeking a refund. A.  Your application can be dismissed for one or more of the following reasons:

A.  You can withdraw the application from ULS by navigating to the ULS Home Page. Click Online Filing and then your purpose for filing, which will be withdraw application. Then, select the application file number you want to withdraw from the system. Sign the application electronically and click the withdraw button. A.  Yes. Modifying an existing application resets the FCC's application processing clock back to the beginning. For example, if you modify an application 1 week after you originally filed it, then the granting (or dismissing) of your application will be delayed 1 week. A.  No. Recent rule changes prohibit filing more than one application per day for a call sign. A.  The date the FCC 'receives' your application is called the 'receive date'. If the call you desire, say N4MC, was cancelled on Aug. 1, 1998, you would want the FCC to 'receive' your application on or after Aug. 2, 2000. The FCC's receipt of your application is more precise if you file online. Online applications and mail-in applications have the same processing priority for same day filing. NOTE: Applications filed on a weekend or holiday will be assigned a 'receive date' of the next business day. A.  You won't have to wait long. Updated tickets, which show your new call sign, usually arrive in the mail within 10 days after your new call sign is granted. You may begin using your new call sign as soon as you receive confirmation from the FCC's website, even though you haven't received your new ticket in the mail yet. A.
Mailed in applications - It may take up to 2 weeks before your application is received into the ULS system, and then displayed at VHQ. If you're worried about the status of your application, check the ULS website, or call the FCC.

Online applications - These applications should be made available in the FCC's daily transaction files and posted at VHQ within 2 days after filing. If you're worried about the status of your application, check the ULS website.

Occasionally, your application data will be omitted from the FCC's daily transaction files. VHQ will show all application data that is made available in the daily transaction files, nothing more, nothing less. A.  Yes. Recent rule changes prohibit filing more than one application for a call sign in a 24 hour period. A.  Please refer to VHQ's Help Reference by clicking this link. A.

A.  Application data displayed at VHQ relies on daily FTP transaction files provided by the FCC. If the FCC does not update the FTP files for a given day, no new application data will be displayed at VHQ. Remember, data displayed at VHQ is not a real-time, mirror image of the ULS database. A.  You cannot view, amend, or even withdraw an application on day it was filed online. Wait until tomorrow when you will have access to your application. A.  Click here to read an article by Alvin, W6WJ, which contains the FCC contact information, FAX number, tips, and instructions. A.  No. You must file a new application, and you must pay another $11.70 filing fee. You can obtain a refund for any application that did not result in a new call sign grant.

Please read VHQ's Help Reference for more information on selecting a call sign and details concerning the application process.
