I have held two 1x2 call signs. The first call sign was an “initials” W-prefix 1x2 that I SK-cancelled. Man, that call sign set into motion a sequence of events that could only be described as a circus. I cancelled my first application for the call sign two days before it was to be awarded. I turned around and applied for N3RQ, only to turn around and apply for a sequential 2x2 while awaiting the award of N3RQ. A couple of days of holding a 2x2 was all it took to reapply for the W-prefix 1x2. Last June, I had an amazingly difficult encounter with an older ham who knew the previous holder that prompted me to reapply for N3RQ.
I recently reapplied to get the W-prefix call sign back, but, deep inside, I know that that call sign will never be mine. The previous holder was a general class licensee when he passed away at the age of 95 in 2000. He did not hold the pre-W-prefix version of the call sign, but he probably held the W-prefix version for over sixty years when he went SK. The older ham with whom I had the run in went SK late last year.
