how does the fee work? what if I don't get the call?

Okay, I am new to this and I am a little confused on the procedure. Let's say there is a call coming up in the database that will be available in September. If I file an application for that call and submit the fee, there is a good chance I won't win the call. So what happens to the fee I paid? What if another call is coming up in November that I want to try for if I don't the first one. I have to wait until it is available to file an application for it. Do I have to submit another application fee? If I try several times for a vanity call and fail all of the times, do I have to seek a refund for each individual fee for each application?

Some guidance from the experienced would be appreciated. I'd like to try for specific calls coming available over the next few months.
